Imo Governor Insists on Zoning Governorship Seat Among Three Zones

Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma has reaffirmed his commitment to the zoning of the governorship seat among the state’s three senatorial zones, emphasizing that justice, inclusion, and consensus are essential for sustaining peace and stability in the state.

The governor made this declaration during a meeting with the Imo Elders Council at the Government House Banquet Hall in Owerri. The council had been tasked with reviewing the Charter of Equity, which governs the rotation of the governorship seat among the Orlu, Okigwe, and Owerri zones.

Uzodinma stressed that the state would not tolerate any form of hostile political takeover, citing lessons from the 2020 political crisis that marked the beginning of his administration. He warned that exclusion from political participation could undermine peace and stability, urging stakeholders to build consensus and respect zoning arrangements.

Describing the Elders Council as the conscience of the state, the governor revealed plans to amend the law establishing the council to strengthen its authority, including the power to sanction members who engage in misconduct. He reiterated that the Charter of Equity ensures fair distribution of key political offices across the three senatorial zones and called on stakeholders to avoid divisive politics.

The governor also reaffirmed Imo State’s alignment with the federal government, acknowledging the support of President Bola Tinubu. He expressed optimism that adherence to equity and justice would guarantee stability and a smooth political transition in the state.

Uzodinma pledged to consult further with stakeholders from all three zones to deepen the consensus needed for political stability, which he noted has eluded the state in recent years. He assured the elders that their role would extend beyond his administration, continuing to advise future governors.

Earlier, Chairman of the Elders Council, Eze Cletus Ilomuanya, commended the governor for promoting unity and sustainable development across all regions of the state. He urged that the Imo Charter of Equity be implemented through fair appointments, balanced project distribution, and equal opportunities across the state’s zones.

Eze Ilomuanya described the charter as a commitment to building an inclusive Imo where no area feels marginalized and every citizen can aspire to leadership without discrimination. He advised the governor to remain guided by the principles of fairness, justice, and peace embedded in the Charter.

The meeting underscores ongoing efforts to institutionalize political equity in Imo State, with both the governor and the Elders Council emphasizing the importance of consensus-building and adherence to established zoning arrangements to ensure long-term stability and inclusive governance.
