Kano Assembly Forms 12-Member Panel to Screen Deputy Governor Nominee Sule-Garo

Kano State House of Assembly has constituted a 12-member committee to screen and confirm the governor’s nominee for deputy governor, Murtala Sule-Garo.

The move follows a formal request from Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, read during plenary by Speaker Jibril Ismail Falgore, seeking the assembly’s approval under Section 191(3) of the 1999 Constitution.

The request comes after the resignation of former Deputy Governor Aminu Abdussalam on March 27, 2026. In his letter, Governor Yusuf said the nomination followed extensive consultations with socio-political, religious, and cultural stakeholders across the state.

He described Sule-Garo as a seasoned public administrator with broad experience at grassroots and sub-national levels. Sule-Garo’s career includes serving as Special Adviser on Inter-Party Affairs to the governor, Chairman of Kabo Local Government, Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Kano State chapter, and Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.

The governor expressed confidence that Sule-Garo’s experience, loyalty, and knowledge of Kano’s political and administrative landscape would enhance governance and support the delivery of democratic dividends.

The screening committee is chaired by Deputy Speaker Muhammad Bello and includes the Majority Leader, Chief Whip, Deputy Majority Leader, Majority Whip, and lawmakers representing Fagge, Sumaila, Warawa, Dawakin Kudu, and Tudun Wada constituencies.

The committee is expected to conclude its work and present its report to the House on Monday.

The nomination and screening process is being closely watched as it comes at a critical time for the administration following the sudden departure of the previous deputy governor.
