IGP Disu Calls for Dismissal and Prosecution of Officers in Mene Ogidi Killing

The Inspector‑General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has recommended the dismissal and prosecution of officers involved in the fatal shooting of Mene Ogidi in Effurun, Delta State. At a press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday, the IGP identified Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Nuhu Usman and five other members of the police team as the officers directly implicated.

Disu described the April 26 incident as “criminal and unprofessional,” stating that it violated the Nigeria Police Force’s oath and standard operating procedures. “No uniform is a licence to kill,” he warned, adding that the action had no place in the force.

Following an investigation, the IGP ordered the immediate transfer of the officers to Abuja to appear before the Force Disciplinary Committee (FDC) and an Orderly Room Tribunal, both already in session. The probe concluded that ASP Usman breached Force Order 237, which governs the use of firearms, and contravened established SOPs. “No level of criminal suspicion justifies extra‑judicial killing. Our duty is to protect life, not extinguish it,” Disu said.

The FDC and the Orderly Room Tribunal have recommended the dismissal of ASP Usman, two superintendents and three inspectors involved in the operation. Upon dismissal, the officers will be handed over to judicial authorities for prosecution on charges of unlawful homicide. The recommendations have been forwarded to the Police Service Commission for final constitutional ratification.

Disu affirmed that the police force maintains a zero‑tolerance policy for lawlessness within its ranks. He expressed condolences to the family of Mene Ogidi and pledged that justice would be “swift, transparent, and absolute.” “I give you my word; justice will not only be done, it will be seen to be done,” he said.

The IGP appealed to the public to remain calm and refrain from vigilantism, urging residents of Delta State and the nation to obey the law. “The era of impunity is over. Every citizen, regardless of uniform, is accountable under the law,” Disu asserted.

A delegation led by an Assistant Inspector General has been dispatched to Delta State to meet with the victim’s family. The police force said the ongoing disciplinary process and subsequent legal action aim to restore confidence and demonstrate accountability within the service.
