Former Edo State Governor Prof. Oserheimen Osunbor accused the All Progressives Congress (APC)‑led federal government of systematically undermining opposition parties in Nigeria during an interview on Channels Television’s “Politics Today” on Friday.
Osunbor, a professor of law, said the government is “doing everything within its power and even beyond its power to destroy opposition political parties.” He added that the independence of the legislature and the judiciary has been eroded, citing recent developments as evidence.
The former governor referenced a viral video that showed President Bola Tinubu’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, allegedly advising House of Representatives member Leke Ajebade to remain in the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and “fight them and scatter them.” Osunbor interpreted the remarks as further proof of the administration’s hostile stance toward opposition formations.
The accusations come amid heightened political tension ahead of the 2027 general elections, where the APC faces challenges from several opposition parties, including the ADC, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party. Critics have previously raised concerns about the use of federal agencies and security forces to intimidate opposition figures, while the government has defended its actions as necessary for national security and political stability.
No official response from the APC or the Office of the President has been released at the time of publication. Stakeholders and observers are expected to monitor developments closely, as the allegations may influence public perception of Nigeria’s democratic processes and the credibility of its institutions.
