The Kwankwasiyya Movement said it is closely reviewing the Supreme Court’s recent judgment on the African Democratic Congress (ADC) leadership dispute to avoid any legal or political missteps.
In a press statement issued on Friday and signed by spokesperson Dr Habibu Sale Mohammed, the movement praised the court for “courage and clarity” in handling the case. The Supreme Court set aside earlier orders that had created confusion over the ADC’s leadership, a decision the group described as a victory for due process and an affirmation of the judiciary’s stabilising role in Nigeria’s democracy.
According to the statement, the court’s ruling corrected procedural irregularities that led to the artificial suspension of the party’s leadership, thereby restoring order and reaffirming that political institutions must operate within the law. While the substantive issues have been remitted to the trial court for further hearing, the Kwankwasiyya Movement said the judgment provides a solid foundation for justice and fairness in the next stage of the case.
“At this critical juncture we are carefully studying the judgment and rigorously analysing its implications, particularly given the limited time left in the electoral cycle,” the statement read. “This is necessary to ensure that we do not inadvertently fall into any political or legal trap that could undermine or prevent our principal and other key actors within the opposition from effectively participating in the 2027 general elections.”
The movement also disclosed that it is exploring lawful and strategic options, including possible alliances with other political platforms. It mentioned potential engagements with the National Democratic Congress and the People’s Redemption Party as part of its effort to neutralise obstacles that could impede its participation in future elections.
The Kwankwasiyya Movement reiterated its core objective: protecting democratic participation and preventing disenfranchisement of Nigerian voters. “Our objective remains clear: to safeguard our political rights, protect democratic participation, and ensure that no contrived circumstances are allowed to silence the voice of the people,” the statement said.
The group assured supporters that a final decision on its political direction will be announced soon, adding that an official position from its leader on any new political alignment will be communicated “in no distant time.” It also highlighted the importance of strong institutions and active citizen involvement in sustaining democracy, urging members to remain calm, focused, and united while consultations continue.
The statement concludes by affirming the movement’s resolve to remain committed to the democratic process, emphasizing that Nigeria’s democracy depends not only on institutional strength but also on the courage of its people to stand firm amid uncertainty.
