NDC: Obi and Kwankwaso Defection Remains Probable

Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Abdulmumin Ohiare Abdulsalam, clarified on Saturday that reports of Peter Obi and Musa Kwankwaso defecting from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the NDC remain speculative.

Abdulsalam’s statement came after media outlets quoted him as confirming the alleged defections. In his response to a journalist’s inquiry, he emphasized that the possibility of the two politicians joining the NDC is a matter of probability, not certainty.

“The party’s position is that discussions about potential defections are still in the realm of speculation,” Abdulsalam said. “We are addressing the issue because it has been widely reported in the press and amplified across various media platforms.”

He reiterated the NDC’s open‑door policy toward politicians who are dissatisfied with their current parties. “From the outset, we have invited both ruling and opposition figures to join what we call the ‘Noah’s Ark’ initiative championed by our National Leader,” Abdulsalam explained, referring to the NDC’s effort to consolidate diverse political actors under a common platform.

The deputy secretary noted that the NDC does not block or encourage defections for its own benefit, stressing that politicians are free to choose any party. “We remain receptive to anyone who wishes to contribute to national development, regardless of their former affiliation,” he added.

While acknowledging ongoing talks with opposition leaders, including members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdulsalam said the NDC will keep its doors open for potential entrants as the country prepares for the 2027 elections. He concluded that, although discussions about a possible multi‑party alliance are underway, the NDC has not ruled out the entry of Kwankwaso, Obi, or other figures.

The clarification comes amid heightened political maneuvering ahead of the next general election, as parties seek to broaden their bases and form strategic coalitions. The NDC’s stance underscores its aim to position itself as a unifying force in Nigeria’s fragmented political landscape.
