NDC settles Kano leadership rift, confirms Mairiga as chairman

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has resolved a leadership dispute in its Kano State chapter, confirming Hon. Husaini Isah Mai Riga as the party’s substantive state chairman.

The conflict emerged after former Kano State governor and Kwankwasiyya Movement leader Engr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso defected to the NDC, prompting challenges to Mai Riga’s authority. While some members questioned his mandate, Mai Riga insisted he would not relinquish the chairmanship without following due process.

In response, the NDC’s national leadership convened a special meeting on Tuesday, chaired by Senator Seriake Henry Dickson. Attendees included Kwankwaso, NDC Northwest Vice Chairman Engr. Muhammad Sabo Bakin Zuwo, and other senior officials. After deliberations, the party affirmed Mai Riga’s position as Kano State chairman.

According to party insiders, Kwankwaso accepted the decision, receiving alternative leadership roles as part of the settlement. Mai Riga thanked the national leadership and Kano residents for their support during the standoff, stating, “I appreciate the support of our leaders and the people of Kano at this critical time. I also apologise to anyone I may have offended in recent days.” He added that “60 percent of the party’s leadership structure has been conceded to Kwankwaso, while I remain the chairman.”

The resolution is aimed at restoring unity within the NDC ahead of the 2027 general elections. By reaffirming its internal hierarchy, the party seeks to present a cohesive front to voters and mitigate further factional disputes.
