A Nigerian physician in Canada has urged singer Portable to undergo a brain scan following his defeat in a celebrity boxing match against comedian Carter Efe in Lagos over the weekend.
Dr. Arinze Onwumelu, also known as Dr Zo, posted a video on social media on Monday recommending that Portable receive a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examination to rule out internal injuries. Onwumelu said several of Efe’s punches landed on vulnerable areas of Portable’s head, raising the possibility of a subdural haematoma or other serious trauma.
“This was an exhibition bout meant for entertainment, not a fight intended to cause harm,” Onwumelu wrote. “The type of blows delivered could result in lasting damage; anyone close to Portable should ensure he gets an MRI and a full brain assessment.”
The physician also called on promoters of similar events to make protective headgear mandatory for participants, citing the need to minimise the risk of severe head injuries.
The bout, which attracted considerable attention from fans and public figures on social media, ended with Portable on the losing side. Prior to the match, the artist had expressed confidence in his fitness, noting previous knockout victories over rapper Speed Darlington and actor Charles Okocha in earlier celebrity boxing contests.
Organisers have not yet responded to the medical advice, and it remains unclear whether Portable will undergo the recommended imaging. The incident highlights growing concerns about safety protocols in informal boxing exhibitions involving non‑professional athletes.
