SDP Relocates May 9 Convention to Bauchi Over Venue Issue

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has moved its national convention, originally scheduled for May 9 in Abuja, to Bauchi State. The change was announced on Wednesday by SDP National Chairman Prof. Sadiq Gombe, who cited difficulties in securing a suitable venue in the capital.

Prof. Gombe explained that the party’s constitution permits conventions to be held anywhere in Nigeria, and that Bauchi offered an acceptable alternative. “Given the challenges in finding a venue in Abuja, we decided to relocate to Bauchi. Constitutionally, the convention can take place anywhere in the country,” he said. He also thanked Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed for providing facilities for the event despite existing political differences.

The convention is a pivotal step in the SDP’s preparations for the upcoming general elections. The party aims to broaden its national footprint and field candidates for presidential, gubernatorial, legislative and other elective positions. To ensure a transparent and credible process, the SDP has established several committees, including Screening, Electoral and Convention committees, together with sub‑committees tasked with specific responsibilities.

Screening of aspirants began at the party’s national headquarters in Abuja ahead of the convention. The exercise will determine the eligibility of candidates for the various offices on the party’s ticket. Air Vice Marshal (Retired) Sadiq Abubakar Lima, chairman of the Screening Committee, emphasized the need for diligence and integrity, warning that only qualified aspirants will be cleared to contest.

Party members were reassured that the screening and convention will adhere to the SDP’s established guidelines. The party’s leadership indicated that the outcomes of the screening will be finalised before the convention, where the slate of candidates will be formally presented.

Relocating the convention to Bauchi underscores the SDP’s flexibility in navigating logistical challenges while maintaining adherence to constitutional provisions. The event will serve as a benchmark for the party’s organizational capacity as it seeks to compete in the forthcoming electoral cycle.
