Canada-based group urges Goodluck Jonathan to run for President in 2027

Supporters of former President Goodluck Jonathan have reaffirmed his intention to run in Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election, according to statements made by the Coalition for Jonathan on Friday.

Dr. Tom Ohikere, who convenes the coalition, told Arise Television that the former leader “must not be misunderstood when he said it’s not a computer game to run for presidency.” Ohikere explained that Jonathan was emphasizing the complexity of a presidential bid, noting that “a lot is involved” and describing the process as “huge” and “comprehensive.”

The coalition’s message came a day after Jonathan announced that he would begin consultations on a possible candidacy. Ohikere said the former president is expected to clarify his position within the next one or two days, although he has not yet formally accepted the coalition’s invitation to return to active politics.

As a member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Ohikere added that he is “strongly calling for Jonathan’s return,” underscoring the political group’s support for the former president’s potential participation in the 2027 race.

Jonathan’s last term as president ended in 2015, after which he succeeded in a power transition to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Since leaving office, he has remained an influential figure within the ADC and has occasionally hinted at a comeback. The coalition’s renewed backing suggests an organized effort to secure his place on the ballot, a move that could reshape the dynamics of the upcoming election.

Stakeholders, including political parties and civil society groups, are watching closely for Jonathan’s official response. If he confirms his candidacy, the 2027 election could see a contest that revisits the policies and leadership style of his administration.

The forthcoming clarification from Goodluck Jonathan will determine whether the Coalition for Jonathan’s advocacy translates into a formal presidential bid, setting the tone for Nigeria’s next electoral cycle.
