Senator Jibrin Barau, a leading contender for the Senate presidency and a third‑timer representing Kano North, recently hosted more than 70 senators‑elect to garner support ahead of the inauguration of the 10th Parliament. Although Barau has not publicly declared his candidacy for the coveted seat, he has dispatched his foot soldiers to meet key stakeholders, including senior federal lawmakers. He currently chairs the Senate Committee on Appropriations.
The gathering took place at the NICON Hotel in Abuja on Tuesday, following the presentation of certificates of return to the lawmakers. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) handed certificates of return to at least 98 senators‑elect at the International Conference Centre in Abuja on the same day.
Seven political parties won senatorial seats in the election. The All Progressives Congress secured a majority with 57 seats, the Peoples Democratic Party won 29, the Labour Party obtained six, the New Nigerian Peoples Party and the Social Democratic Party each captured two, and the All Progressives Grand Alliance and the Young Peoples Party each earned one seat.
