The Ondo State Police Command announced on Saturday that it has opened an investigation into the deaths of a woman and her baby in Owo, the headquarters of Owo Local Government Area. The victims were a 29‑year‑old woman identified as Tawa and her five‑month‑old child. They were found unconscious, with the baby already dead, in their home on Friday. The family had gone to bed in good health on Thursday.
According to a source, the couple had purchased a new generator a few days earlier, and it was running on Thursday evening before they retired for the night. This has raised suspicion that generator fumes may have been involved. On Friday, emergency responders found the baby deceased and the parents unconscious. Both were taken to the Federal Medical Centre in Owo; the wife later died while the husband remained in critical condition.
The deceased’s elder sister grew concerned when she did not see her at work on Friday afternoon. She and several co‑workers went to the house, found the door locked, and forced entry. Inside, they discovered the couple in a coma and the baby already dead. They immediately rushed the family to the Federal Medical Centre, where the wife passed away and the husband was left in critical condition.
State Police Public Relations Officer Mrs. Funmilayo Odunlami confirmed the incident and said the investigation is ongoing. “At this stage we cannot determine the exact cause,” she said. “Some are suggesting generator fumes, but an empty bottle of insecticide was also found in the room, leading to speculation that the couple may have sprayed it before sleeping. The investigation continues.”
