Peseiro provides injury update on Troost-Ekong ahead of Guinea-Bissau qualifiers

Super Eagles head coach, Jose Peseiro has revealed his captain, William Troost-Ekong is doubtful for the upcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying double-header against Guinea- Bissau.

Troost-Ekong has been sidelined since sustaining an injury in Salernitana’s Serie A clash against Hellas Verona in mid-February.

Salernitana had issued a statement that the centre-back will be missing in action for two weeks.

The 29-year-old is, however, still recuperating from the injury and is set to be excluded from Nigeria’s squad to face the Djurtus this month.

“He is our captain. I know he really wanted to come and play. He told me often. I am in contact with the trainers and coaches of the Nigerian players,” Peseiro told Sportitalia.

“Those of Ekong told me that he is working a lot, although there is not much chance of taking him with us in the next games. My friend Paulo Sousa also confirmed this to me.”

Peseiro is expected to unveil his squad for the qualifiers next week.

The Super Eagles will host the Djurtus in the first leg on Friday, March.24 at the Moshood Abiola Stadium, Abuja.

The reverse fixture will take place three days later in Bissau.
