A member of the Public Affairs Committee of the Presidential Campaign Council of the All Progressives Congress, Cham Sharon, has urged the party’s leadership to back the speakership ambition of incumbent Deputy Speaker Ahmed Wase. Sharon argues that zoning the Speaker’s office in the upcoming 10th National Assembly to the North‑Central geopolitical zone would reward “loyalty and faith” in the APC’s ideology, noting that Wase hails from Plateau State in that region.
In a statement issued on Sunday, Sharon highlighted that “an overwhelming majority of Nigerians have kept faith with the governing APC by handing the party continuity in the presidency and a comfortable majority in both chambers of the National Assembly.” He made the appeal as the APC’s national leadership and president‑elect Asiwaju Bola Tinubu have scheduled a closed‑door meeting with lawmakers‑elect to discuss zoning of leadership positions in the Senate and the House. While Tinubu is from the South‑West and Vice President‑elect Kashim Shettima is from the North‑East, aspirants for National Assembly leadership—particularly the Senate President and House Speaker—have emerged from across all six zones. Sharon therefore calls for the speakership to be zoned to the North‑Central.
Sharon contended that the party’s electoral triumph is well‑earned, citing unprecedented achievements in infrastructure and local productivity that resulted from “progressive collaboration and support given the Executive branch by the leadership and members of the National Assembly, who are majorly of the APC.” With the party poised to lead the country into another phase of development, he said it is a matter of principle and honor for the APC to zone the Speaker’s office to the North‑Central and to support Rt. Hon. Ahmed Idris Wase, the current Deputy Speaker, for the position.
He emphasized that zoning the speakership to the North‑Central and backing Wase would recognize and reward loyalty and sacrifice. Since the 2015 general elections, a significant portion of the North‑Central has shown unwavering support for the APC, and Sharon argued that “it will be just and noble to appreciate this support and loyalty by ceding this important national office to them so that the party can expand and maintain its hold in the region.” He described Wase as “a perfect example of what loyalty and respect for the APC ought to be,” noting that the Deputy Speaker has consistently toed the party line and demonstrated “panache for excellent congressional leadership” while deputising Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila. Consequently, Sharon concluded, it is easy to see that Wase can resolutely lead the next House and help the party achieve further victories for the Nigerian people.
