PSG Outlast Arsenal in Thrilling Penalty Drama to Keep Champions League Crown

PSG retain the Champions League title after a dramatic penalty shootout win over Arsenal, following a 1-1 draw in extra time.

PSG-1-1

Paris Saint-Germain successfully defended their UEFA Champions League title on a nerve-wracking night, beating Arsenal 2-1 in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 stalemate that went the full 120 minutes. The French champions showed incredible grit, bouncing back from an early mistake to hold their nerve when it mattered most.

Arsenal stormed out of the gates, grabbing a sixth-minute lead when Kai Havertz pounced on a defensive mix-up. The German forward charged into the box and smashed a superb shot under the bar, leaving PSG goalkeeper Matvey Safonov with no chance. That early blow stunned the holders, but they slowly found their rhythm, leaning on the creativity of Ousmane Dembele, Desire Doue, and Vitinha to take control of the game.

For all their possession, PSG struggled to crack Arsenal’s disciplined backline in the first half. Fabian Ruiz came closest for the Parisians, but David Raya had a relatively quiet evening as the Gunners took a slender lead into the break.

The second half was a different story. PSG cranked up the pressure, and Arsenal’s resistance finally cracked in the 65th minute. A VAR review awarded a penalty for a Cristhian Mosquera foul on Dembele, who stepped up and drilled his spot-kick low into the corner to make it 1-1. The equalizer turned the match into a gripping back-and-forth battle. PSG pushed hard for a winner, with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia hitting the post and Vitinha firing a powerful long-range effort just wide. Arsenal looked dangerous on the counter, bringing on Viktor Gyökeres, Gabriel Martinelli, and Eberechi Eze to chase a decisive goal.

Neither side could find the breakthrough in regulation, sending the final into extra time. Chances were scarce as fatigue set in, but Martin Zubimendi nearly snatched it for Arsenal in the dying moments, only for a PSG defender to make a crucial block from close range. So, the Champions League final went to penalties.

The shootout had its own twists. Goncalo Ramos and Desire Doue scored for PSG, while Gyökeres and Declan Rice answered for Arsenal. Safonov then became the hero, denying Eberechi Eze, though Raya kept Arsenal alive by saving Nuno Mendes’ effort. Achraf Hakimi put PSG back ahead, and Gabriel Martinelli converted to keep the Gunners in it. The decisive moment came when Lucas Beraldo calmly slotted home PSG’s final kick, leaving Gabriel needing to score for Arsenal. He missed, sparking wild celebrations among PSG players and fans. The French giants had completed a dramatic title defense, cementing their place as Europe’s top club.
