Liverpool have fired manager Arne Slot following a rocky season where the club failed to defend its Premier League crown, finishing a disappointing fifth. The decision came despite a record-breaking spending spree of nearly 450 million pounds on new players last summer. Slot, who took over from Jurgen Klopp just two years ago, led the team to a league title in his first year but saw things fall apart this season.
Fans turned on the Dutchman after a string of lackluster performances, and tensions in the dressing room boiled over. Mohamed Salah, who is leaving the club, was the most vocal critic. In a social media post that several teammates liked, Salah called for a return to the “heavy metal football” style of Klopp, taking a clear swipe at Slot’s more cautious tactics.
Liverpool scraped into the Champions League but their 60-point haul was the lowest since the 2015/16 season. Club bosses initially suggested Slot might stay, but fan pressure from Fenway Sports Group owners pushed them to act. A club statement said the change was needed for a “different approach,” though they thanked Slot for his title win.
Now all eyes are on Andoni Iraola, the outgoing Bournemouth manager. He led the Cherries to their first European spot ever with an 18-game unbeaten run to finish sixth, just three points behind Liverpool despite having far less money to spend. Iraola has history with Liverpool’s sporting director Richard Hughes, who worked with him at Bournemouth.
Slot’s downfall was partly tied to big-money signings failing to deliver. Record buy Alexander Isak struggled with injuries, and Florian Wirtz, brought in for 100 million pounds from Bayer Leverkusen, never adapted to the Premier League. Off the pitch, the team was rocked by the death of forward Diogo Jota in a car crash in July.
While some fans hoped for Xabi Alonso’s return, the former Liverpool midfielder is set to take over at Chelsea next season. Iraola now looks like the man to lead a new chapter at Anfield.
