Super Eagles vice‑captain William Troost‑Ekong has hailed his compatriot Victor Osimhen as the world’s best striker after the Napoli forward’s dazzling start to the season. The 24‑year‑old has been in scintillating form, netting 19 goals in 22 league matches. His exploits earned him Serie A’s Player of the Month for January and the Goal of the Month award for a spectacular, Pele‑like strike against Roma in the same period.
Osimhen’s prolific scoring has been a key factor in Luciano Spalletti’s Napoli leading the league, sitting 18 points clear of second‑placed Inter Milan and on course to claim the Italian title for the first time in over three decades. Speaking on DAZN’s “Tutti Bravi dal Sofa” (as per Tutto Napoli) on Sunday, former Napoli defender Faouzi Ghoulam argued that Osimhen has not yet reached the level of Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema or Manchester City’s Erling Haaland, describing Benzema as “the best striker today” and Haaland as “a phenomenon in the penalty area.”
Troost‑Ekong, however, disagreed, insisting that “Osimhen is probably the best striker in the world right now. I am happy for him because he has overcome difficult moments,” as quoted by Sports Italia. The 29‑year‑old, who joined Salernitana on loan from Watford, also commented on Osimhen’s future amid speculation linking him with Manchester United. He added, “It’s a very important year for him; he can win the Scudetto, and then he’ll be able to think about the future.”
