President Donald Trump declared the United States must retaliate, directly accusing Iran of shooting down an American Apache helicopter that crashed near the strategic Strait of Hormuz. In a fiery post on Truth Social on June 9, Trump confirmed both pilots survived the incident without injury. “Nevertheless, the United States must, of necessity, respond to this attack,” the president stated, raising tensions in a region already on edge. The New York Times reported that the crew of the gunship was rescued on Monday, June 8, following the crash near the Iran-controlled waterway. This confrontation unfolded just a day after Iran and Israel agreed to halt hostilities, heeding an appeal from Trump. Tehran, however, warned it would resume attacks if Israel continued targeting Hezbollah in Lebanon. The fragile ceasefire comes as Washington pushes for a broader agreement to end a conflict that has raged for over three months. Despite the renewed skirmishes, Trump insists he believes Iran is eager to secure a peace deal with the U.S.—a claim he has repeated throughout ongoing negotiations.
