President Donald Trump has nominated former Securities and Exchange Commission Chairman Jay Clayton to lead the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, a move aimed at calming the storm over his previous pick for the post. Clayton, a respected figure in legal circles, currently serves as the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, overseeing high-profile cases in Manhattan.

In a social media post, Trump praised Clayton’s standing in the legal community, urging the Senate to confirm him swiftly. “Few people anywhere in the Legal Community are respected at the level of Jay,” the president wrote, signaling his desire for a smoother confirmation process than his initial choice faced.

The nomination comes after Trump’s selection of Bill Pulte, the 38-year-old head of the Federal Housing Finance Agency, as acting DNI in May. Pulte, a close Trump ally with no intelligence background, has drawn sharp bipartisan criticism over his qualifications and alleged misuse of his housing role to target the president’s adversaries. His appointment also threatened to derail Trump’s push to renew Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, a key surveillance tool.

Senator Chris Van Hollen, a Maryland Democrat, welcomed Clayton’s nomination, saying “Anything’s better than Pulte.” Senate Majority Leader John Thune, a South Dakota Republican, also backed Clayton, calling him an “incredibly competent manager” with a strong reputation.

The DNI role requires Senate confirmation, and Clayton’s nomination is expected to face less resistance than Pulte’s, though Democrats may still scrutinize his ties to Trump’s financial and legal circles. Clayton’s background as SEC chair and his current role in New York could position him as a steady hand for the intelligence community, which has been rocked by political turbulence under Trump.
