Alejandro Garnacho has vowed to return “stronger than ever” after being ruled out for both Manchester United and world champions Argentina. The 18-year-old forward suffered an injury during Sunday’s 0-0 draw against Southampton, being withdrawn just 17 minutes after coming off the bench following a challenge by Kyle Walker-Peters. Garnacho, who left Old Trafford on crutches, confirmed via Instagram that he will miss upcoming matches for United and will be unable to join the Argentina squad for their friendlies against Panama on March 23 and Curacao three days later.
Expressing his frustration, the Under-20 international wrote, “It is difficult to put into words how I’m feeling right now. Unfortunately, I will not be able to help my team and teammates in the upcoming games in what is a very important part of the season for us at Manchester United.” The Madrid-born forward also noted his disappointment at missing the opportunity to represent Argentina, stating it would have been “a great and proud moment for me and my family.” However, he remains optimistic, adding, “This is part of football and our profession, however. I am already focused on my recovery. God has taught me to never give up and I will make sure I am back stronger than ever.”
While United manager Erik ten Hag suggested after Sunday’s match that he did not believe the injury was “too bad,” neither the player nor the club has specified the exact nature of the injury or the expected recovery timeline. This setback comes during a breakthrough season for the teenager at Old Trafford; since making his Premier League debut against Chelsea last April, Garnacho has scored four goals in 29 first-team appearances across all competitions.
