A close friend returned to Nigeria after fifteen years in the UK, eager to furnish his dream home. He expected to find the same old furniture stores that once defined Enugu’s commercial landscape. Instead, they were gone. In their place stood Spar supermarkets and Jiji, a thriving ecommerce platform. He bought everything online, from his living room, with a few taps on his phone. The city had quietly reinvented itself.

This story is a stark reminder that the world never stands still. The Igbo apprenticeship system, once a cornerstone of local commerce, now gives way to salaried employees and digital enterprises. Wealthy post-civil-war families like the Ekenedilichukwus and Nkwuochas built empires that vanished into history, leaving no enduring institutions behind. The lesson is brutal: adapt or die.

Consider the giants that fell. Blockbuster ignored streaming and perished. Kodak invented the digital camera but feared cannibalizing its film business, leading to bankruptcy. BlackBerry dismissed touchscreen smartphones as a fad and paid dearly. Even Google, the internet’s defining force, now faces an unexpected contest for relevance from ChatGPT and generative AI.

Artificial intelligence is reshaping medicine, education, law, and finance. Algorithms detect breast cancer and predict clinical deterioration before patients become critically ill. The question is no longer whether AI will transform these fields, but whether professionals will adapt. Lawyers who resist AI will compete against those who embrace it. Teachers who adopt technology will outperform those who don’t. Nations that invest in innovation will shape the future; those clinging to outdated systems risk irrelevance.

The challenge is psychological. We mistake today’s reality for tomorrow’s certainty. But certainty is an illusion. My friend furnished his home online, marveling at how much had changed. Technology doesn’t pause for the comfortable. Progress has no reverse gear.

I’m now learning about distributed ledgers and Satoshi Nakamoto, not to trade crypto, but because my ability to practice medicine may one day depend on understanding these technologies. Health startups are already experimenting with blockchain. As Charles Darwin cautioned, it’s not the strongest or most intelligent that survive, but those most responsive to change.

In life, business, and nations, there are only two choices: adapt or perish.
