A 38-story office tower in Midtown Manhattan is teetering on the edge of disaster, with emergency crews scrambling after reports of structural failure. The Fire Department of New York rushed to the scene on East 42nd Street just before 8 a.m. on July 7, following frantic calls about bricks raining down from the high-rise.

When firefighters arrived, they discovered a nightmare unfolding: two columns had buckled on the 21st and 22nd floors, and the floors between the 21st and 26th were sagging dangerously. The building, once the iconic Pfizer headquarters, is currently being converted from commercial offices into residential units, a project that has now turned into a life-or-death operation.

David Maggiotto, a spokesperson for the city Department of Buildings, confirmed that inspectors were dispatched to investigate reports of a compromised steel beam on the 21st floor. They remain on-site, probing the extent of the damage. As a precaution, several addresses along 42nd and 43rd streets were evacuated, and authorities warned residents to brace for traffic delays as emergency personnel cordoned off the area.

Miraculously, no injuries have been reported so far, but the FDNY says operations are ongoing. The developer, Metro Loft, issued a statement vowing to work hand-in-hand with the buildings department to get to the bottom of the crisis. The department, in a social media post, promised a news briefing with more updates as the situation unfolds.
