Chicago Bears coach Ben Johnson has said that wide receiver Luther Burden is poised to build on his promising rookie season and could become one of the league’s top receivers.
Johnson, who was the Dolphins’ wide‑receiver coach when Jarvis Landry was among the NFL’s elite, told Fox 32 in Chicago that Burden belongs to an elite group of players who “flip a switch” when they take the field. “They kind of flip a switch when they go on the field and they feel like they’re invincible and they’re the best players out there,” Johnson said.
The Bears’ offensive coordinator noted that Burden’s competitive edge was evident even when he was not a full‑time starter a year ago. “He wasn’t a full‑time starter for us a year ago, but the snaps that he did have, he’s got that competitive edge and desire to be great, and it’s carried over into the spring and summer as well,” Johnson said. Burden has worked closely with the team’s strength staff, “he wants to be the most conditioned player on the team, wants to be one of the strongest receivers on the team and just continues to soak in all the knowledge.”
Johnson drew a comparison to former Lions star Amon‑Ra St. Brown, whom he coached in Detroit. “St. Brown in Detroit, who I have a strong affinity for, he plays the game the same way. I feel that from Luther,” Johnson said.
Burden finished his rookie campaign with 47 receptions, the second‑highest total among Bears receivers behind D.J. Moore. With Moore Traded away this season, the coaching staff plans to give Burden more targets. Johnson believes the player is more than ready for the increased workload.
The Bears’ decision to elevate Burden’s role comes as the team seeks to strengthen its passing attack.
