The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) branch at Abdullahi Fodio University of Science and Technology (AFUSTA) in Aliero has issued a two‑week ultimatum to the Kebbi Government, demanding that the university’s outstanding welfare and contractual issues be resolved or face an indefinite strike. The statement, released on Sunday, was jointly signed by Dr Isah Musa‑Fakai, Chairman of the union, and Dr Gado Abubakar, Secretary.
In the press release, the union warned that the government’s failure to address the matters affecting the university would compel it to “down tools.” It said the ultimatum serves as a reminder to all stakeholders and authorities to act on the lingering demands. If the issues remain unresolved, the union will proceed with a total, comprehensive, and indefinite strike until all outstanding matters are fully settled.
The union’s statement also highlighted the persistent non‑implementation of the FGN/ASUU 2025 Agreement, which became effective on 1 January 2026. The agreement, along with other welfare concerns affecting AFUSTA members, remains a point of contention. The union explained that after an interaction between the ASUU‑AFUSTA branch congress and the ASUU National Visitation Team on 30 July, the congress carefully reviewed the current situation at the university. “After extensive deliberations, it became evident that, in spite of previous communications and engagements with the appropriate authorities, the issues that gave rise to our concerns remain unresolved,” the statement read.
Consequently, the congress unanimously resolved to issue a two‑week ultimatum, effective from 31 July to 13 August, to the Governing Council and University Management. The goal is to fully implement the FGN/ASUU 2025 Agreement and address all outstanding welfare issues affecting the union’s members. The union cautioned that this decision should not be taken lightly by the authorities, emphasizing that industrial action is always a last resort after dialogue and constructive engagement have failed.
Despite the firm stance, the union reaffirmed its commitment to constructive dialogue and peaceful resolution of disputes. It urged the authorities to act within the stipulated period to prevent disruption of the academic calendar and to maintain stability for students, staff, and the wider Kebbi community.
The ultimatum underscores the ongoing tension between AFUSTA and the Kebbi Government over contractual and welfare matters that have yet to be resolved. The union’s readiness to strike highlights the seriousness of the situation and the need for a timely and comprehensive response from university management and the state government.
