Abuja’s Jabi Lake is poised to become the centrepiece of a major new leisure destination as Akida Hills moves forward with a phased development across a 3.36-hectare site within the broader 14-hectare waterfront district. The first phase is scheduled to open in December 2026, marking the first time a dedicated destination has been built around the lake.
The project’s signature feature will be West Africa’s first dancing musical fountain, combining choreographed water displays with synchronised lighting and music. Designed to animate the waterfront after sunset, the fountain is intended to become a defining experience associated with the capital.
Unlike many waterfront developments that treat water as a backdrop, the design positions Jabi Lake as the focal point. Walkways, viewing decks, promenades and public gathering spaces are arranged to encourage direct engagement with the lake rather than passive observation. Plans also include recreational water-based activities to deepen visitor interaction.
The development aims to sustain activity from morning through evening. A curated mix of dining, leisure and entertainment is planned to appeal to families, professionals, tourists and residents, with the goal of encouraging longer stays and repeat visits.
Beyond the initial launch, Akida Hills intends to introduce regular programming including live entertainment, community events, family activities and seasonal experiences. A large-scale festive lights festival is envisioned as an annual highlight, complementing the fountain and waterfront dining to potentially become a fixture on Abuja’s seasonal calendar.
The December 2026 opening represents the start of a multi-phase rollout. Additional attractions, hospitality offerings and experiences are expected to be introduced over time, allowing the destination to evolve alongside the city.
If delivered as planned, the Jabi Lake waterfront could join the ranks of global waterfronts that shape urban identity — offering residents a new way to experience their city and giving visitors a lasting memory of Abuja.
