Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso praised midfielder Romeo Lavia after the Belgian international completed his first full match in over two years during the Blues’ 3-0 pre-season victory over AC Milan at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Central Jakarta, Indonesia, on Saturday.
The 22-year-old was among only four Chelsea players to participate for the entire duration of the friendly, alongside goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, defender Josh Acheampong, and midfielder Marco Palestra. Lavia played a pivotal role in Chelsea’s midfield, orchestrating play and disrupting the rhythm of Ruben Amorim’s team throughout the 90 minutes.
Joao Pedro gave Chelsea the lead just before halftime, heading home from close range past goalkeeper Lorenzo Torriani. The striker doubled the advantage less than a minute into the second half, converting from inside the six-yard box. Moises Caicedo added a third shortly after, striking a volley with the outside of his foot from outside the penalty area. While Lavia did not get on the scoresheet, his influence in midfield was evident as Chelsea controlled proceedings.
The appearance marked the first time since August 4, 2024 — when Chelsea faced Manchester City in a pre-season friendly — that Lavia had completed a full match. Speaking to club media after the win, Alonso said: “I am very happy with him because he has a break, a block (while gesturing to his head).” He continued: “He was fatigued, but I told him, ‘Let him play, let him enjoy the 90 minutes.’ He finished the match exhausted, so I believe he is truly happy.”
The outing represents a crucial step forward for Lavia, who has endured a frustrating spell on the sidelines since his arrival at Stamford Bridge. With the Premier League season on the horizon, Alonso will take encouragement from the midfielder’s ability to withstand the physical demands of a full contest. Chelsea’s pre-season schedule continues as they fine-tune their preparations for the upcoming campaign.
