Rams QB Plan: Simpson Playing, Bennett Undecided for Preseason Opener

Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay has clarified his quarterback rotation for the team’s preseason opener, confirming that rookie first-round selection Ty Simpson will see action while leaving the status of veteran Stetson Bennett unresolved.

Speaking to reporters on Saturday, McVay stated Simpson “definitely” will play in the first of three exhibition contests. Regarding Bennett, the coach offered a direct assessment: “I haven’t decided on Stetson yet.”

The decision carries immediate implications for practice distribution. Should Bennett sit, the full complement of 12 preseason quarters would be divided between Simpson and Matthew Caldwell, an undrafted rookie who completed his collegiate career at Texas.

Bennett, 28, entered the league as a fourth-round pick in the 2023 draft but has yet to appear in a regular-season game for Los Angeles. The upcoming weeks represent a critical evaluation window for the backup role behind starting quarterback Matthew Stafford. McVay has indicated the No. 2 job will ultimately come down to a competition between Simpson and Bennett, with Caldwell serving as a developmental third option.

Simpson’s performance across the preseason schedule is expected to weigh heavily on the final determination. The coaching staff will use the three-game slate to assess command of the offense, decision-making under live conditions, and readiness to step into a primary relief role if required.

Should neither young quarterback separate themselves convincingly, the organization may revisit external options. Veteran Jimmy Garoppolo, who served as Stafford’s primary backup for the previous two seasons, has signaled a willingness to continue playing in 2026. A reunion would provide immediate experience and system familiarity, though McVay suggested a final verdict on the quarterback room may not arrive until after the third preseason game.

The Rams open their exhibition schedule with a clearer picture at the top of the depth chart but significant questions remaining behind their franchise passer. How Simpson handles his first extended NFL action could define the trajectory of the position group for the season ahead.
