Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission has extended the deadline for political parties to submit their governorship and state assembly candidates for the 2027 general Elections. The new cutoff is Tuesday, 11 August 2026, three days later than the original Saturday, 8 August deadline.
Mohammed Kudu Haruna, the INEC National Commissioner who chairs the Information and Voter Education Committee, announced the change in a statement released on Saturday. He said the commission approved the extension after receiving appeals from political parties requesting more time to finalise their candidate lists.
The submission process requires parties to upload their nominated candidates to INEC’s dedicated portal. The window applies specifically to the governorship elections and the state houses of assembly contests scheduled for February 2027.
“INEC wishes to inform political parties and the public that it has approved an extension of the deadline for the submission (upload on the dedicated portal) of the list of candidates for the Governorship and State Houses of Assembly Elections for the February 2027 General Election,” the commission said.
The revised timetable reflects a pattern of adjustments as the electoral body manages the complex logistics of Africa’s largest democracy. Party primaries, internal disputes, and legal challenges often compress the window for finalising candidates, prompting repeated requests for flexibility.
INEC has maintained that the portal will close at the new deadline without further extensions. Parties that fail to upload their lists by 11 August risk fielding no candidates in the affected races.
The commission has urged parties to use the additional days to resolve any outstanding issues and ensure accurate submissions. Errors or incomplete entries could trigger litigation after the deadline passes.
Observers note that the extension, while brief, provides critical breathing room for smaller parties with limited administrative capacity. Larger parties, too, often grapple with last-minute negotiations over ticket balancing across states.
INEC’s timetable for the 2027 cycle remains on track for the February polls. The commission has signalled that other key dates — including the presidential and national assembly nominations — will proceed as scheduled unless formally revised.
Political parties are now expected to intensify their screening and documentation processes ahead of the Tuesday cutoff. The commission has not indicated whether the portal will remain accessible outside official hours on the final day.
