Chief Reuben Fasoranti, the leader of the pan‑Yoruba socio‑political association Afenifere, has urged President‑elect Bola Tinubu to prioritize security and the economy when he takes office. In a statement released through his Administrative Secretary, Chief Oladiran Adesua, on Wednesday, Fasoranti warned that the nation’s insecurity and economic conditions have deteriorated sharply. He emphasized the urgent need for the new president to create employment opportunities for youths across the country.
“The security situation has worsened over the last few years,” Fasoranti said. “Nigerians can no longer travel freely on our roads or railways, and they do not feel safe in their homes and farms. Nigeria has never experienced this level of insecurity before.” He praised the efforts of South‑West governors and other state leaders who have responded with initiatives such as Amotekun to combat the menace. “I call on the President‑elect to make security a priority immediately after he assumes office on May 29, 2023,” he added.
Equally pressing, Fasoranti noted, is the economic crisis. “We must swiftly curb the rising unemployment rate to reduce youth restiveness in various parts of the country,” he urged. He also appealed for calm and peaceful conduct during the upcoming elections on Saturday, 18 March 2023, when Nigerians will vote for new governors and state legislators in thirty‑six states.
The nonagenarian elder statesman commended Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo‑Olu for his achievements in office and called on Lagos residents to “go out en‑masse on Saturday to cast their votes for Sanwo‑Olu,” the All Progressives Congress candidate.
