For millions of MTN subscribers in Jalingo, Taraba State, Thursday turned into a day of frustrating silence. A complete network failure swept through the city, knocking out calls, text messages, and data services for hours, and leaving residents cut off from the world.
The disruption was total. Subscribers found themselves unable to place or receive calls, send SMS, or access WhatsApp and other internet-based services. A sweep through the state capital by DAILY POST revealed a city struggling to function, as countless attempts to dial out or connect to mobile data simply failed. The result was a communication vacuum that left many stranded, unable to reach family, business partners, or customers.
The economic toll was immediate and severe. In a city where commerce runs on mobile connectivity, the outage hit like a sledgehammer. Business owners, particularly those reliant on daily transactions, watched helplessly as deals stalled and revenue evaporated.
Uche Alexander, a spare parts dealer, didn’t mince words. “For the past three hours, I have been finding it difficult to communicate with my business partners, and that has made me lose millions of naira,” he told DAILY POST. His frustration was palpable as he urged MTN’s management to act swiftly, calling for an urgent investigation into the cause and a rapid restoration of service for Jalingo and other affected areas.
Paulina Kamuel echoed the sentiment, painting a stark picture of widespread disruption. “Majority of the people in Jalingo and the state as a whole rely on MTN, and I can tell you that a lot of businesses have been crippled in the past three or four hours that the network has disappeared,” she said. For her, the outage wasn’t just an inconvenience—it was a direct assault on the daily lives of residents who depend on telecoms for everything from banking to social connection.
The timing couldn’t have been worse. Mobile services have become the backbone of modern life here, powering commercial activities, financial transactions, and social interaction. With the network down, even the simplest tasks became monumental challenges.
As of the time of filing, the root cause of the disruption remained a mystery. MTN had yet to issue a statement, leaving affected subscribers in a state of anxious waiting. The silence from the network operator only deepened the frustration.
This incident has sparked a broader conversation among residents about the fragility of the nation’s telecom infrastructure. Many are now asking a pointed question: why aren’t providers doing more to maintain reliable networks and communicate openly with subscribers when things go wrong? For the people of Jalingo, the answer can’t come soon enough.
