INEC Revives Four State Constituencies in Delta and Kogi After Court Rulings

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially reinstated four State House of Assembly constituencies in Delta and Kogi States, a move long awaited by local political stakeholders. The restoration follows court directives that mandated the commission to bring these electoral areas back into the fold ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a statement released on Friday, August 14, 2026, INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, confirmed that the affected constituencies are Abraka, Isoko North II, and Ughelli South II in Delta State, alongside Yagba West II in Kogi State. These areas had previously been suppressed, but now return to the electoral map, giving residents a renewed voice in state governance.

The commission has slated party primaries for these restored constituencies to run from August 21 to 25, 2026. Interestingly, these primaries will run parallel to those already scheduled for several bye-elections across the country. These include the Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency in Gombe State, the Disina and Sakwa State Constituencies in Bauchi State, the Udu State Constituency in Delta State, and the Dawakin Kudu State Constituency in Kano State.

INEC has fixed the actual elections for all these constituencies on September 19, 2026. Beyond that, the commission clarified that all other timelines and activities outlined in its revised schedule for the 2027 general election will apply to the newly restored constituencies, ensuring a seamless integration into the broader electoral calendar.

Political parties have been urged to submit their notices of primaries to INEC well ahead of the scheduled dates. Haruna reiterated the commission’s stance, stating, “The Commission remains committed to ensuring credible, inclusive, and transparent electoral processes.” This restoration marks a significant step toward rectifying previous omissions and reinforcing the integrity of Nigeria’s democratic framework.
