Arsenal chief executive Richard Garlick has confirmed that manager Mikel Arteta is set to sign a new contract “very shortly,” providing a significant boost to the club’s stability ahead of the new Premier League season.
Speaking to the BBC, Garlick said both the club and the Spanish coach are keen to extend a partnership that has returned Arsenal to the summit of English football. “Mikel wants to be at Arsenal, and we want Mikel at Arsenal. It’s only a matter of time before we put that into a new contract,” Garlick stated. “Everyone is very confident and calm. We’re just navigating a transfer window, and I’m sure Mikel’s contract will be resolved very shortly.”
Arteta, who guided the Gunners to their first Premier League title in 22 years last season and led the club to the Champions League final, entered the final 12 months of his current agreement. He signed his most recent extension in September 2024, but negotiations over a longer-term deal have gathered pace in recent weeks. The club expects to finalize the arrangement once the summer transfer window closes later this month.
Since replacing Unai Emery in December 2019, Arteta has overseen a comprehensive rebuild at the Emirates Stadium, transforming Arsenal into consistent title contenders and re-establishing them among Europe’s elite. A new long-term deal would secure the managerial continuity the club views as essential for sustaining their trajectory domestically and in Europe.
With the squad strengthened during the summer window, Arteta will now turn his full focus to the defence of the Premier League crown as the new campaign gets underway. The resolution of his contract situation removes a potential distraction, allowing the manager and the hierarchy to concentrate solely on adding further silverware.
