The Peoples Democratic Party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, warned Nigerian voters not to succumb to apathy, assuring them that the alleged electoral fraud by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will soon be reversed. He made the statement in a broadcast on Wednesday, ahead of the March 18 governorship and state Houses of Assembly elections.
Atiku thanked Nigerians for their patriotism and resilience in facing numerous challenges to fulfill their civic duty during the February 25 presidential election. He praised their tenacity, courage, and non‑violent conduct despite provocations, noting that their faith in rebuilding the country aligns with the PDP’s vision.
Citing both local and international observers, Atiku claimed the February 25 presidential election results announced by INEC were “grossly tainted” and did not reflect the electorate’s will. He argued that the announced results breached the 2022 Electoral Act and INEC’s own guidelines, which the commission had previously pledged to uphold, as seen in the Osun and Ekiti elections. He also criticized the INEC chairman for ignoring calls to review the process under the amended law.
Emphasizing the need for continued resilience, Atiku urged citizens to defend Nigeria’s democracy by exercising their right to vote in the upcoming March 18 elections. He encouraged patriotic participation, stating that casting votes peacefully and in accordance with the Electoral Act and INEC guidelines would demonstrate opposition to the “sham” of the February 25 election. Finally, he called on voters to support PDP candidates, describing the party as “the only true national party” capable of delivering a greater and more prosperous Nigeria.
