Battery Startups Pivot to Defense Sector After EV Incentives Gutted

U.S. battery Startups facing a sharp downturn in electric vehicle demand have found a critical revenue stream in the defense sector, securing major federal grants to supply advanced power systems for military hardware.

Political shifts in Washington that rolled back key clean energy and EV incentives undercut projected commercial demand for domestic battery firms. However, the Department of Defense and the Department of Energy have moved quickly to classify advanced battery technology as a national security priority, directing capital toward domestic production to reduce reliance on foreign supply chains.

The Department of Energy recently awarded substantial grants to three venture-backed companies. Coreshell, a battery materials startup, secured $50 million to scale manufacturing of its metallurgical silicon anode material. The company confirmed that military and defense applications are central to its strategic discussions with federal partners.

Lilac Solutions received $100 million to construct a commercial lithium processing facility at the Great Salt Lake in Utah, targeting annual production of thousands of metric tons of lithium carbonate. Nth Cycle was awarded $100 million to build a specialized facility that refines black mass from recycled lithium-ion batteries into battery-grade critical minerals.

While the automotive sector remains the anticipated long-term volume driver for energy storage, defense procurement offers immediate, stable contracts for technological validation and revenue. Military platforms ranging from autonomous drones and tactical radios to torpedoes and fighter jets require lightweight, reliable domestic power sources that meet stringent performance standards.

The pivot underscores a broader industrial strategy: securing American energy dominance through domestic critical mineral processing and advanced manufacturing. As geopolitical competition intensifies, the ability to produce high-performance batteries within U.S. borders has become inseparable from military readiness and supply chain resilience.
