Delta Commissioner Aniagwu: Omo-Agege Lacks Campaign Ideas

Delta State Commissioner for Works and Public Information, Charles Aniagwu, has dismissed allegations by former Deputy Senate President Ovie Omo-Agege that the state government is threatening his life, describing the claims as a desperate bid for media attention.

Aniagwu made the remarks during an interview on Arise Television, responding to a statement by Omo-Agege in which he alleged credible threats to his life and family members emanating from the Delta State Government House in Asaba. Omo-Agege, who is contesting the Delta Central senatorial seat, had called on the Nigerian public, the international community, civil society organisations, the media, and security agencies to take note of the purported danger.

According to Aniagwu, the former lawmaker’s decision to lead with threat allegations on his first day of campaigning signals a lack of substantive ideas to present to voters. “Omo-Agege is trying to mention our names so that he can have a cheap way to come to the media,” the commissioner said. “What we have observed is that a number of these persons like himself lack campaign ideas against Governor Oborevwori. They’re not even on the same ballot.”

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, Aniagwu emphasised, does not engage in intimidation. He pointed to the relative peace and stability recorded across Delta State over the past three and a half years as evidence of the administration’s commitment to security and governance.

The exchange underscores rising tensions in the state’s political landscape ahead of the legislative polls. While Omo-Agege frames his petition as a matter of personal safety and democratic accountability, the government’s rebuttal seeks to reframe the narrative around governance performance and campaign substance.

Security agencies have yet to issue a public statement on the allegations. Observers note that the credibility of such claims — and the political motives behind them — will likely influence voter perception in Delta Central as the election approaches.
