Federal Government College, Ijanikin, Lagos, emerged as the overall winner of the 2022 African Coding Competition, which was held online in November 2022. The AfriCAN Code Challenge is a continent‑wide contest that invites young people aged eight to 16 from diverse backgrounds to develop a game using the Scratch programming language.
According to a statement from the school, the college team secured both first and second places in a competition that attracted over 150 private and public secondary schools across Nigeria. In addition to being the overall winner, the college was ranked among the ten best schools in Africa for coding and is set to represent Nigeria in future contests. The achievement reflects the college’s commitment to academic excellence and its dedication to maintaining high standards. The instructors and learners whose efforts brought this success were praised as worthy of commendation.
Mrs. Toun Aderele, President of the Old Students Association, remarked that the college has a history of great accomplishments and that this victory adds another feather to its cap. A newsletter on the Africa Code Week website noted that this year’s competition received thousands of entries from more than 30 countries, ranging from South Africa to Ethiopia. The winners of the African Code Challenge were selected by a distinguished panel that included Africa Code Week delegates, SAP employees, and STEM education specialists.
