The Katsina State Police Command announced on Wednesday that human and vehicular movements will be restricted in the state during Saturday’s governorship and state assembly elections. In a statement released in Katsina that evening, the command explained that the restrictions are intended to ensure free, fair, and peaceful elections, as well as to protect the electorate during and after voting.
The statement, signed by the command’s spokesman, SP Gambo Isah, read: “The Katsina State Police Command, in its determination and total commitment towards free, fair, credible and peaceful governorship and state House of Assembly elections scheduled for Saturday, March 18, 2023, across all 34 local government areas of Katsina State, wishes to inform the general public that, after due consultation with relevant stakeholders supervising the forthcoming election, the following restriction orders are hereby made:
– Total restriction of movement for persons and vehicles from 12 midnight on Friday, March 17, 2023, to 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 18, 2023.
– Politicians and Very Important Persons (VIPs) are barred from going to any voting centre with their security details and orderlies, and are warned to refrain from moving from one place to another on that day, as stipulated by the Electoral Act 2022 (as amended).
All entry and exit points into the state will be manned and blocked by security personnel, and no movement will be allowed until the elections are over. The police and other security agencies will conduct robust patrols to ensure compliance with this order and to facilitate a hitch‑free exercise.
The command has made adequate arrangements to provide security for all voters, enabling them to cast their votes without fear of harassment or molestation. Deployment of policemen and other sister security agencies to man the polling units has been concluded. The police call on all good citizens of Katsina State to partner with security agencies to make the elections a success.
The command also warns that any person or group contemplating undermining the electoral process will be tackled decisively. Parents are urged to advise their wards against any illegal actions, as the full wrath of the law will descend on anyone caught infringing electoral laws or any other law of the land.
In this regard, the Commissioner of Police, Katsina State Command, CP Yusuf Akeem, wishes the people of the state a peaceful and successful conduct of the governorship and state House of Assembly elections.
