The Enugu State Police Command announced the arrest of two brothers accused of killing a security guard and his 12‑year‑old son while attempting to steal and sell their uncle’s car. The statement, released on Thursday by State Police Public Relations Officer DSP Daniel Ndukwe, said that State Commissioner of Police Ahmed Ammani ordered the prosecution of the siblings after the investigation.
The suspects, Chinedu Nnaona, 25, and Maduabuchi Nnaona, 21, both from Onuakpaka, Ndiagu‑Akpugo in Nkanu West Local Government Area, were detained on 13 March 2023 by officers from the Uwani Police Division. Their arrest followed a report received on 12 March at the Nkanu West Police Division alleging the murder of Christian Ngene, the security guard and caretaker of the hometown residence of the brothers’ uncle, Onuakpaka Ndiagu‑Akpugo, and Ngene’s 12‑year‑old son, Promise Ngene.
According to the police statement, operatives from the division promptly arrived at the scene, recovered the victims’ bodies, and transported them to a hospital where doctors confirmed their deaths. The remains were placed in a mortuary for preservation and autopsy. Investigators also recovered two knives, two pairs of gloves and broken pieces of a concrete baluster, which were used by the suspects.
During the preliminary investigation, the brothers confessed to the crime. They explained that they left Port‑Harcourt, Rivers State, where they lived with their parents, and traveled to the uncle’s home with the sole aim of stealing and selling his Mitsubishi Grandis car, which was parked in the compound. To execute their plan, they obtained knives, entered the compound in the early hours of 12 March by scaling the fence, and used the baluster to attack the security guard in order to obtain the building’s keys. The guard resisted, but the brothers overpowered him and repeatedly stabbed him to death. They then stabbed the sleeping son to prevent being identified. After ransacking the building in search of the car key without success, they fled at daybreak to Maryland, Enugu, where they were apprehended while attempting to treat injuries inflicted by the guard during his resistance.
Describing the incident as sad, barbaric and heinous, the police spokesman quoted Commissioner Ammani as ordering the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department to expedite the investigation and arraign the suspects within a record time.
