Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has declared Friday a public holiday. In a statement released Thursday by the governor’s spokesperson Olawale Rasheed, the holiday was explained as a measure to allow residents to travel to their polling units for the State House of Assembly election scheduled for Saturday. The governor urged citizens to remain peaceful and law‑abiding as they prepare to vote, emphasizing the importance of the election: “This election is very critical as you will be electing lawmakers who will be working with me. You must vote right.” He called on Osun people to turn out and exercise their civic rights.
Similarly, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde approved a half‑day for civil and public servants on Friday, 17 March 2023, ahead of the same Saturday election. A circular issued by the Secretary to the State Government, Olubanwo Adeosun, stated that the shortened workday was intended to enable those who wish to travel to vote. Governor Makinde’s Chief Press Secretary, Taiwo Adisa, clarified that offices would close at noon, with only essential‑service staff remaining on duty. The notice read in part: “This approval of a half‑day at work will enable public and civil servants who may wish to travel to perform their civic responsibilities to do so… Government offices are to close by noon on Friday, 17 March 2023, while employees covering essential services are expected to remain at their duty posts. Public and civil servants in the state are enjoined to go out on Saturday, 18 March 2023, to perform their civic responsibilities.”
