The remains of Ghanaian footballer Christian Atsu, who died in the devastating earthquake that struck southern Turkey last month, have been laid to rest in Accra, the capital of Ghana. Atsu was among the victims of the 7.8‑magnitude quake that rocked Turkey and Syria on 6 February, an event that claimed at least 54,000 lives in the two countries.

Atsu went missing after the collapse of an apartment building in Hatay, but his body was later recovered from the rubble and flown back to Ghana. His burial ceremony took place at the presidential villa, attended by President Nana Akufo‑Addo, numerous citizens, representatives of Ghana’s national team, and officials from his Turkish club, Hatayspor, who all came to pay their final respects.

The late footballer represented Ghana at the 2014 FIFA World Cup and helped his nation finish as runners‑up at the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations, where he was named Player of the Tournament and scored the Goal of the Tournament.
