The electoral officer in charge of Maradun Local Government Area in Zamfara State, Bashir Shagari, was kidnapped by unknown gunmen. According to a source, Shagari was traveling to the INEC collation centre in Gusau to deliver the governorship election results for Maradun when he was abducted on Monday. He was accompanied by other INEC staff when they were stopped on a bridge near Maradun town and taken to an unknown destination.
The incident was confirmed to The by INEC’s state Public Relations Officer, Muktari Janyau, who said the matter has been reported to police headquarters. Janyau added that the resident electoral commissioner for Zamfara State, Professor Sa’idu Babura Ahmed, has informed the police commissioner so that appropriate action can be taken. The spokesperson for the state police command, SP Mohammed Shehu, could not be reached for comment at the time of this report.
Meanwhile, results from nine of the fourteen local government areas have been announced, with the opposition PDP leading in seven of the declared local governments.
