The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Delta State has urged Deputy Senate President Ovie Omo‑Agege to accept his defeat in Saturday’s governorship election. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced that the PDP candidate, Sheriff Oborevwori—who also serves as Speaker of the State House of Assembly—received 360,234 votes, defeating the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Omo‑Agege, who garnered 240,229 votes.
In a statement issued on Monday by Delta State Commissioner for Information Charles Aniagwu, the PDP called on Omo‑Agege to acknowledge the poll’s outcome and congratulate Oborevwori. The party maintained that the election was conducted in accordance with the Electoral Act 2022 and was credible. “It is disturbing that the APC, which unleashed terror on innocent voters in Ughelli North Local Government Area and parts of Ethiope West LGA, now points fingers at others,” the statement read. “Having won six state constituencies, the APC cannot now claim the election failed to comply with the Electoral Act 2022. We therefore call on the APC governorship candidate and Deputy Senate President, Ovie Omo‑Agege, to act as a true democrat and congratulate his brother, PDP candidate Sheriff Oborevwori, on his well‑deserved victory.”
Omo‑Agege, however, rejected the results in a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary Sunny Areh. He alleged widespread irregularities, describing the PDP’s “so‑called victory” as fraudulent and unacceptable in a decent society. According to Omo‑Agege, many of these infractions are documented and known to INEC officials and the security agencies that supervised the election. He cited the February 25 presidential and National Assembly elections, in which the APC won two of the three senatorial zones in Delta State, arguing that the March 18 governorship result contradicted the clear verdict of Delta voters after 24 years of PDP rule. On these grounds, Omo‑Agege and the APC leadership unequivocally reject INEC’s declaration of Sheriff Oborevwori as the winner.
Governor‑elect Oborevwori dedicated his victory to God and pledged to build on the achievements of incumbent Governor Ifeanyi Okowa. Reflecting on his six‑and‑a‑half years as Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, he said the experience has prepared him to take the state to the next level. “I have learned the importance of setting government priorities, communicating policy goals and outcomes, and pursuing them with relentless zeal,” he added.
