President Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) has approved the reappointment of Mr. Idris Musa as Director General of the National Oil Spills Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA). The Ministry of Environment announced the decision on its Twitter handle (@FMEnvng) on Monday, noting that the reappointment follows Musa’s excellent performance over the past four years. Musa was first appointed on April 1, 2019 for an initial four‑year term, and the renewal takes effect from April 1, 2023, marking a second and final four‑year term.

During his first tenure, Musa oversaw several key initiatives. He led the digitalisation of the agency’s records, revised various forms used in oil‑spills management processes, and updated the environmental sensitivity index map that guides protection of the vulnerable, sensitive, and fragile ecosystems in the Niger Delta. He also conducted numerous awareness campaigns on the dangers of vandalising oil facilities.

Musa further modernised the agency by introducing online, real‑time processing of environmental compliance documents and management tools, as well as launching the National Gas Flare Tracker and Oil Spill Monitor. These measures aim to enhance transparency in environmental management within the oil and gas industry.

The statement also highlighted that NOSDRA has begun preparations to track methane—a potent greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming and disrupts climate systems—in oil‑producing communities across Nigeria. This initiative reflects the agency’s ongoing commitment to environmental monitoring and protection.
