The Ebeano political group, founded by Chimaroke Nnamani and currently led by Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State, has abandoned the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in favor of the All Progressives Congress (APC). This shift comes just 24 hours after Nnamani himself left the PDP following his defeat in a Senate bid, where he lost to Labour Party candidate Kelvin Chukwu.
Chief Emmanuel Okwor, chairman of the Ebeano group, announced the decision to join the APC on Tuesday. In his statement, Okwor said the alliance “is to consolidate the partnership with President‑elect Bola Tinubu to achieve good governance in the country.” He added that members of the Ebeano political family across the nation had been consulted and agreed to the alliance in the interest of the people, believing that the group’s interests and welfare would be better served within the APC structure.
Since its establishment in 1999, the Ebeano political family has been the dominant force in Enugu State, consistently producing governors, senators, members of the House of Representatives, state assembly members, ministers, and local government officials. However, the recent “political hurricane” generated by Peter Obi disrupted the group’s hold on power in the state. According to tradition, the highest political office holder in Enugu—currently Governor Ugwuanyi—serves as the leader of the Ebeano group.
