Lapo – Lift Above Poverty Organisation (Lapo) Microfinance Bank recently rewarded its customers with cash prizes in a raffle‑draw promotion. The live draw, held at the bank’s head office in Lagos, was organized to encourage a savings culture among Nigerians. A total of 170 winners received consolation prizes, while the star winner walked away with N500,000.
Speaking at the event, Dorcas Thorpe, Head of the Corporate Planning Department, explained that the bank wanted customers to view Lapo not only as a source of credit but also as a full‑service bank offering diverse financial products. “Many customers prefer commercial banks for savings and turn to microfinance banks only for loans,” she said. “We aim to change that perception and use this promotion to promote savings among our customers and the public at large.” Thorpe emphasized that savings build resilience for low‑income earners, providing a safety net in emergencies. She added that the winners demonstrate the tangible benefits of saving and highlighted Lapo’s three‑decade legacy, noting, “The amount you save with us is yours, and the benefit is yours.”
The savings promotion, launched in November 2022, ran for three months and encouraged customers to open a Lapo Savings Express account and deposit a minimum of N10,000 each month. Over the campaign period, 43,000 new accounts were opened, mobilising more than N160 million. The star winner, Sherifat Haruna from the Yola branch, who sells foodstuff, plastic rubber and other delivery items, expressed her delight at the outcome.
