The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has confirmed that Thursday, 23 March 2023, will be the first day of Ramadan in Nigeria. He made the announcement during a broadcast from his palace in Sokoto on Wednesday evening, speaking as President General of the Nigerian Supreme Council of Islamic Affairs.

He explained that Wednesday, 22 March 2023, corresponds to the 29th day of Sha’aban 1444 AH, marking the end of Sha’aban. Moon‑sighting reports from Muslim leaders and other organisations across the country were received, verified, and authenticated by the state and National Moon Sighting Committee. Consequently, the following day, Thursday, 23 March 2023, will be the first day of Ramadan 1444 AH, and the Muslim ummah is urged to begin fasting accordingly.

The Sultan also called on Muslims nationwide to use the month for extra prayers, seeking success for the new leaders who emerged from the recently concluded general elections.
