The Federal High Court in Port Harcourt granted N100 million bail on Wednesday to Dr. Chinyere Igwe, a member of the House of Representatives representing Port Harcourt Federal Constituency 2, who faces money‑laundering charges. Igwe was arrested on the eve of the presidential election with $498,100 in cash and was arraigned before Justice Stephen Daylop‑Pam. He entered a not‑guilty plea and subsequently applied for bail, which the judge approved with a N100 million bond.
Among the bail conditions, Justice Daylop‑Pam ordered Igwe to surrender his passport to the Nigeria Immigration Service and prohibited him from leaving the country until the trial concludes. The judge adjourned the case, setting May 4 as the date for the trial’s commencement.
Igwe, an ally of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, has been in police custody since his arrest in Port Harcourt on February 24. He is among the prominent Rivers State politicians who have fallen out of favour with Governor Nyesom Wike, also a PDP member, who refused to support the party’s presidential candidate, Atiku.
