The trial of former Senator Isah Misau was postponed on Wednesday at the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Kubwa because prosecution witness Jimoh Moshood was absent. Prosecutor Ejovi Oghojafor explained that Moshood was on a national assignment and could not attend, noting that a letter to that effect had been filed with the court and served on the defendant. Justice Asmau Akanbi‑Yusuf therefore adjourned the case until April 19 to allow for cross‑examination.
The Attorney General of the Federation has charged Misau with seven counts of injurious falsehood, to which he has pleaded not guilty. According to the News Agency of Nigeria, the AGF alleges that Misau falsely claimed police officers receive up to N2.5 million for special promotions and postings, that the money is paid through the Police Service Commission, and that the Inspector General of Police receives about N10 billion monthly from oil companies, banks, hotels and individuals as bribes for police protection. The prosecution also says Misau asserted that the Inspector General diverted funds intended for the purchase of armoured personnel carriers to buy sport‑utility vehicles. These statements were reportedly published in a newspaper and broadcast on Channels Television’s “Politics Today” in August 2017, and were made knowing they would damage the reputation of the then‑Inspector General, Ibrahim Idris. The alleged offences contravene Section 393(1) of the Penal Code.
