The Defence Headquarters announced on Thursday that troops rescued at least 201 kidnapped Nigerians and that 1,506 terrorists surrendered during various operations over the past two weeks. Director of Defence Media Operations Maj. Gen. Musa Danmadami briefed journalists in Abuja on military activities from March 9 to March 23.
On March 14, 2023, troops carried out clearance operations in terrorist enclaves within the Ngala Local Government Area of Borno State. They rescued 49 kidnapped civilians—26 adults and 23 children—neutralised 13 Boko Haram/Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters, arrested six logistics suppliers, and freed an additional 119 abducted civilians.
In another operation, troops searched suspected kidnappers’ hideouts in Moyaladi, Miya, and Gaya villages (Askira‑Uba LGA, Borno State) and in Modori and Gurusulu villages (Yunusari LGA, Yobe State). The raid resulted in the arrest of four suspected kidnappers and the rescue of six kidnapping victims.
Operation Whirlstroke forces neutralised 14 terrorists, detained 12 terrorist logistics suppliers, and rescued 16 abducted civilians. Overall, 1,506 Boko Haram/ISWAP members and their families surrendered: 154 adult males, 514 adult females and 838 children.
During the same period, troops in the North‑West zone recovered a cache that included 14 AK‑47 rifles, one PKT machine gun, one RPG‑7 tube, 15 magazines, seven pump‑action guns, 139 rounds of 7.62 × 54 mm linked ammunition, 218 rounds of 7.62 mm special ammunition, and 47 rounds of PKT ammunition.
In the South‑East, forces eliminated seven criminals and arrested 32 members of the Indigenous People of Biafra/Eastern Security Network.
