No fewer than 25 people were killed in a crash at Udubo along the Hadeja‑Potiskum Road in the Gamawa Local Government Area of Bauchi State. Ten others sustained varying degrees of injuries in the incident, which involved a Toyota Hummer bus.
The Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Bauchi State, Yusuf Abdullahi, confirmed the details to our correspondent on Friday. He said a total of 35 people were involved: 19 male adults, 11 female adults, two male children and three female children. According to Abdullahi, the bus driver lost control and rammed into 11 people who were taking shelter under a tree near a car wash.
“The crash occurred on Thursday, 23 March 2023,” Abdullahi stated. “The vehicle was an ash‑coloured commercial Toyota Hummer bus with the number plate JMA 59XA. Overloading and a speed violation caused a tyre burst, leading to loss of control.” He added that the driver’s name is not yet known. “Because the weather was hot, the victims were under the tree when the bus struck them. Twenty‑four people were inside the bus, while the remaining 11 were sheltering under the tree, as reported by the Nigeria Police Force.”
A medical doctor at the hospital confirmed that 25 people—nine male adults, 11 female adults, two male children and three female children—had died, and ten others suffered various bruises.
In response, FRSC Corps Marshal Dauda Biu ordered the immediate establishment of a command with operational facilities in Gamawa, Bauchi State, to prevent further road crashes. Assistant Corps Marshal Bisi Kazeem, the Corps Public Education Officer, said the order was given in Abuja following the fatal crash. The new command will address traffic rule violations and enhance safety along the route to curb the excesses of errant drivers.
